The laser rifle has been one of the main military weapons for longer than any other energy weapon.
These weapons have the highest accurate and effective range of any standard rifle. Adding this to their relatively low mass and zero recoil makes them excellent weapons for smaller or weaker beings.
The ultra-long-range variant (700 m accurate range, 2 km effective range) makes use of stabilisation and balancing gyros. It is a highly coveted field weapon, as it allows the user to pick off targets from a range where they have no worry of return fire.
They emit an extremely thin ray of radiation from the discharge mechanism that has the effect of adding copious heat to the target. They are powered by a microfusion generator, that can be detonated causing an explosion with twice the normal weapon damage (blast radius = 2m).
