Laser pistols are the smallest of the small for range weapons. They emit an extremely thin ray of radiation from the discharge mechanism that has the effect of adding copious heat to the target. Their extremely light mass and complete lack of recoil make them useable by even the most frail beings. Also, the output of a laser is virtually silent - audible only as a light hum at the pistol (and some sizzling at the target). Balancing this compactness is the fact that they are not very effective weapons - often a good kick in the shin can cause more damage.
